Stress Strain recorder

I am trying to record the stres and strain of certain rebars in my model, so I created the element recorder for stress strain. However, I am doing a push over analysis and the stress strain recorder records a cyclical response for the rebar eventhough the node recorder gives the correct pushover response, this doesn't make any sense. Anyone have an idea of why this might be happening? Thanks
