3D Model of one floor RC frame:

I have prepared the input file for a one floor reinforced concrete frame (3d model) and I run the analysis only with gravity loads and it fails. The messages I get are the following:

WARNING BandGenLinLapackSolver: solve () - LAPACK routine returned 4
WANRING NewtonRaphson::solveCurrentStep () - the LinearSysOfEqn failed in solve ()
StaticAnalysis::analyze() - the Algorithm failed at iteration : 0 with domain at load factor 0.1
Opensees> analyze failed returned : -3 error flag

I attach the input file for your better information. Could you give me any advice in order to avoid these messages and get it done correctly?

The error message you get means that the equation of motion can not be solved due to instability of the model. Check your boundary conditions and make sure that you do not have hanging nodes. I would suggest you to use display recorder (http://opensees.berkeley.edu/wiki/index ... ode_shapes) to visualize your model. This can help you find the error if it is related to geometry and connectivity of your elements.

Thank you very much for your immediate reply. I understand your comment but I want just to mention that because I have imagined that this might be the case I have already tried the same geometry and connectivity with elastic elements and the static analysis runs without problem. However, I will take a better look using the display recorder. Thank you very much again.

I am having this same problem, and I also am able to run a static analysis but not a dynamic analysis. I was wondering if this knowledge could help narrow down the potential source of the problem. ie material properties, support conditions, hanging nodes, connectivity, element compatibility...

It is surprising to me that the static analysis and modal analyses work but then the dynamic analysis fails instantly. What could be the reason for this scenario? Can this knowledge be used to narrow down the potential source of the failure?

Could it be element compatibility? I use truss, dispBeamColumn, beamWithHinges, ShellMITC4, rigidDiaphragm and rigidLinks in my model.

Update: I have experimented with adding intentional hanging nodes and elements and this causes my analysis to fail during the static stage - therefore I don't think I'm problem is related to stability of to erroneous connections. I have displayed my building thoroughly as well and it looks OK. Could the problem be that I have used rigidLink beams in series at many points in my model to represent built up joint connections? This is my best guess at this point. Therefore, I have replaced the rigidLinks with elasticBeamColumns, but this is causing my static analyses to run VERY slow. Perhaps equalDOF would be acceptable? Are there any other alternatives?
