I guess that the zerolength element decides on what is positive displacement or rotation by subtracting node2-node1 (or jNode-iNode) quantities. Playing with those ElasticPPGap elements seems to show such a behavior, where knowing which part is activated each time makes a huge difference in the response.
Can you opensees guys out there confirm this (and maybe place the answer in the manual as well)?

And by the way, I really appreciate everybody's contribution on OpenSees. It is really great to be able to do 3D nonlinear dynamic analyses with just a 3Mb free program! You should see the jaws dropping in some presentations when I refer to this.
