hinge rotation

Post by khatibi_m »

n the beam with hinges element the hinge rotation is determined by multiple the curvature output over the hinge length. (Dr scott)
any output element recorder is curvature which obtain with deformation in element recorder. is this right? or is this output hinge rotation ?

to Mr. Khatibi
Hi
would u plz tell me what's the reference for the relation u've talked about between Rotation and Curvature? (Rotation=Curvature*HingeLength)
I'm looking for the reference
Thanks in advance

i don't have a reference.
rotation is actually the integration of curvature over the length.
it's in mechanics books, i'd guess.

Dear Silvia
Thanks for your reply.
this is what I've just received from Dr. Scott who has developed this element:

"The rotation and curvature are related by the plastic hinge length. The exact relationship is described in "Plastic Hinge Integration Methods for Force-Based Beam-Column Elements", Journal of Structural Engineering, Feb. 2006."

I checked the mentioned paper, here's what it says:

"...Therefore, the plastic rotations are the product of the plastic curvature, and the associated plastic hinge length at each end of the element.
Eq. (23) demonstrates that the plastic curvatures can be obtained through a scaling of the plastic rotations computed with the modified Gauss–Radau plastic hinge integration method. This simple relationship between plastic rotation for the element and the plastic curvature is a major advantage of the new integration method."

I hope it would be useful for you and others, just as it is for me. :)

Regards
