Try using displacement-based beam column element (dispBeamColumn) with a more refined mesh. In doing this, you may want to reduce the number of integration points as well.

I could not see the necessary information to define the element orientation for 2D problems in the manual. The only information available is in 2D - bending is about the local z-axis as a footnote.
